Good news for drug smugglers! 90% of all incoming narcotics make it into Israel without detection. Um…That first bit was a joke. But the stat isn’t.

This story says that …

More than 100 tons of marijuana and hashish was smuggled in from Sinai last year, but security forces confiscated only 1.2 tons of marijuana and 490 kilograms of hashish in the first half of the year… The borders with Egypt and Jordan are completely breached.

This all comes from Police Commissioner David Cohen who had a wee chat with Israel’s Cabinet members about the problem yesterday.

That being said, the positive news is that there’s been a decline in crime in the first half of 2007 compared to the same period last year. Robberies dropped by 18.9 percent, property crimes by 9.8 percent and break-ins by 9.3 percent. Cohen presented those figures to Cabinet members too.

  2. Perhaps a correlation between more drugs and less crime ;)

  6. 90% of all drugs make it to their distination here in the US as well. Short of becoming a hermit state like North Korea there is no way to prevent most of the drugs being smuggled into a country from reaching its destination. As long as there is a demand for an illegal drug there will more then enough supply for it.
