Hillbillies of the Arab World?
Across the divide – that would be political and geographic for Israelis – lies Libya. Right next to our next-door neighbors, Egypt.
We don’t hear much about Libya. Unless there’s a huge storm brewing over patient care, nurses, HIV infections and death penalties.. Or there’s a trial over a downed jetliner or….

I’ll be the first to admit that mention of Libya immediately conjures Muammar Ghaddafi. And THAT immediate association incenses blogger “Anglo-Libyan”.
In his recent post “Pride & Prejudice”, Anglo-Libyan asks: Why isn’t there more press about Libya in the Arab world? Why do I meet other Arabs and the 1st thing they mention is Ghaddafi?
Are we that unimportant? are we really the hillbillies of the Arab world, the laughing stock?? Do we only blame our government for isolating our country for so long and making our reputation as an uneducated non entity nation?
Anglo Libyan then goes on to list top honors Libya has earned throughout the years and achievements countrymen can be proud of.
If you’re into trivia: Libya is 90% desert and has one of Africa’s highest per capita Gross Domestic Products due to the country’s large petroleum reserves.
On a personal note, nice to know that we’re not the only paranoid ones in the region. Sheesh…

Thanks for linking to Anglo-Libyan. The post and its comments were quite good, even moving especially the last comment about the fate of Libya’s Jews. It is true we only think of Libya in regards to Ghaddafi and terrorism. Otherwise we think Libya consists only of deserts, camel caravans and oil. Nice to know there other things and people that are Libyan and should be recognized.
