Where there’s a will…

test tubesApparently, where there’s a biological will, there’s a way, thanks to the efforts of an initiative by attorney Irit Rosenblum, head of the New Family Organization. According to this article, approximately 150 soldiers have decided to sign a biological will designed to pave the way for future use of their frozen sperm by their spouses. The driving force behind the initiative was last summer’s Second Lebanon War. During that time, Rosenblum began to receive calls from soldiers who, anxious over events they had seen while serving, wanted to ensure that they would still be able to have children, even if they themselves did not return from battle.

“We were sitting there, in the tank, and one of my friends found out he just lost his brother,” said A, a 31-year-old reservist in the Armor Corps.

“That made me realize I might not make it back. I heard about the biological will, talked it over with my wife and she urged me to do it,” he added.

The cost of the procedure is approximately $470, and it costs an additional $165 per year to store the sperm.

The article also mentions that “Some soldiers, who currently do not have significant others, have their parents down as executors of their will, allowing them to choose if the sperm is to be used to impregnate a surrogate.” Hopefully, the living will can alleviate the need for court cases such as this one, where it took four years for bereaved parents to receive authorization from the courts to use their slain son’s sperm in order to carry out his wishes to have a child.

The first concert I went to in Israel was David Broza’s. After the event I went out and bought his CD. And listened to this song repeatedly…ah, the romantics at heart…Here he’s featured more recently with Keren Peles…Lovely.

Summer Coop

Kids up to nothing whatsoever over the summer? Worried about keeping them occupied and happy? Don’t have the funds for fancy camps?

Take a very large cue from A Mother in Israel and her friends: They run their own do-it-yourself coop for kids where they share the responsibility and take turns hosting “camp” sessions. In turn, everyone gets a break, the kids have fun and the cost isn’t crippling, especially if you’ve got a household full of little ones to entertain.

Read here for Mother’s last year entry on getting the coop up and running. A sampling:

We organized a cooperative camp with two other families (and a few hangers-on). This year we meet 4 days a week. Each day a different family hosts and on the fourth day we take a trip. We have 10-12 children ranging from 2-1/2 to 12 years old. So far we’ve gone to the local zoo, the fire department, and Ganei Yehoshua in Tel Aviv (all on the bus). We have a theme–each family does a different country when they are hosting. For Australia we made ANZAC cookies and learned about kangaroos and platypuses, and for Italy we made pizza and gelato. This week we are doing Mexico. It’s a commitment, because I have to prepare in advance and be on the ball the day of camp, but the kids have a great time.

A large kudos for the creative effort, energy and determination.

The Heat

When it’s hot in Israel, it’s hot. Be it weather, politics or …(fill in the blank)… No messing around.

Anglosaxy puts it quite succinctly:

Bleedin’ ‘eck. I don’t want to make any of my Brit posse jealous (love the wellies!), but ….it’s hot over here! Really disgustingly hot. The sticky, sweaty hot that’ll drive you nuts. The hot that’ll follow you out of the shower and disguise itself as a sheen of shower water, when it fact it’s a fresh outbreak of sweat (Jees, my towel stinks!). The hot that’ll leave your t-shirt sticking to your back after a five-minute drive in your air-con car…because the air-con didn’t have enough time to kick in.

I’m off to put my head in the fridge
