Dead time II

The Grateful Dead tribute show on Sat. night in Jerusalem for the 12th anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s death was a truly enjoyable evening.

Over 200 fans of all ages (although the graying beards outnumbered the boogying college students) jammed the tiny Yellow Submarine for two sets of exuberant singalongs, semi-successful attempts at Dead-style jamming, and loads of good cheer.

Lead guitarist Eliezer Blumin, looking like a member of ZZ Topp, was phenomenal, at times coming close to channeling the ghost of the evening’s tribute.

With a toast to ‘Rebbe Garcia’, band leader Aryeh Naftali directed the band and special guests with the informality that marked the Dead. And it was pretty cool seeing clearly religiously observant Carlebach types freely dancing in mixed crowds in the flowing Deadhead style spawned by a million acid trips.

Let’s hope it becomes an annual event!
