One Year Ago this Week…
One year ago this week, the Second Lebanon War ended. As mentioned on Israelity here, Israeli blogger and journalist Lisa Goldman marked the one-year anniversary of the war with not one, but two visits to Beirut, wanting to see for herself the city that she’d heard so much about. Lisa recently grabbed the cover of Time Out Tel Aviv with an extensive, fascinating article about her impressions of Lebanon’s capitol city, and took the time to translate the article into English, taking the time to add additional information that she felt readers would appreciate.

“On my first day in Beirut, the man who sold me a newspaper told me, “Many things are strange in Lebanon. Here, the strange is normal.” I wanted to answer, in a casual tone, “I know what you mean. I’m from Tel Aviv, and normal life can seem pretty strange there, too.” I wondered if the kiosk philosopher would think it strange-but-normal that an Israeli tourist was wandering around Beirut, one year after the war. And I am not sure I can describe how strange it was to feel simultaneously very comfortable and very fearful as an Israeli in Lebanon.”
