Hat – and reality – check

September 3, 2007 - 9:02 AM by

Sunday was the first day of school, and we had our last first grader to send off. But instead of doting on him, and taking pictures, I was dealing with my other first grader – the 18-year-old doing her army service in the Israel Police.

She had been home for Shabbat, spending most of her time with her boyfriend who was celebrating his birthday. Rushing home Saturday night, just before sunrise to shower and pack, she headed back to her base at 5:30 am.

At 6 am, the phone woke us up.

“Daddy, can you come to the ‘tachana merkazit’ (central bus station) in Jerusalem right now?”

“Honey, I can’t even open my mouth right now – what’s wrong?”

“I left my hat under my bed – they won’t let me back in the base without it – and if I don’t make my 6:30 bus, I’ll be late.”

hat

Needless to say, I was out of the house and on a bus in 10 minutes, with said hat in hand. While she missed her 6:30 bus, she did get the next one and made it back to the base without further incident.

And while I missed my son’s first day of 1st grade, I felt some comfort in the fact that no matter how old they get, there are still times when your kids need you.

  4. Save a thought for the children in Sderot.

There is an abominable document that is adhered to by military forces in the West today. It is the immoral “Just War Theory”, based on the St Augustine Christian doctrine. This is too adhered to by the supposedly Jewish, Israel Defense Force.

Essentially it allows – and this is contained in international law – only “proportional” response and requires that defenders for example, risk and sacrifice their own lives under circumstances where the enemy is concerned. Moral equivalence is standard.

The result is the situation in Sderot, where the IDF stands by and effectively does nothing. Of course Israel also does not have any political leaders with courage these days, far more interested in being loved by the world and enriching themselves at the expense [lives] of Israelis.

If this is the best that can be done, do not be surprised when Iran is allowed to construct a nuclear bomb. Then it will be too late.

Western civilization is in jeopardy – and do not think that the unthinkable is impossible. People also thought that Germany could never become and do what it did in WW2.

This is a very Kafkaesque period as the West moves away from self defense to self sacrifice.

For the Israeli people to not be standing outside the Knesset in massive numbers, protesting that one of the most powerful and advanced military powers in the world cannot protect its children is a national disgrace.

Does anyone even imagine what the United States would do [despite its adherence to the JWT] if Mexico rocketed El Paso and the children could not go to school in safety??
