Is the Gaza Strip headed towards Taliban style Islamic practice?

According to a local Hebrew news report, Hamas has implemented a new “modesty squad” of sorts. The squad’s job is to track down citizens deemed offenders.

What constitutes an offense?

Riding in a car beside a member of the opposite sex who isn’t a relative or spouse.

Apparently special force members have lists and the lists have names and the forces go after the names on the list because they are persons suspected of conducting relations outside the confines of marriage.

If apprehended, both parties are taken in for questioning and sometimes the woman’s family is informed of the proceedings. According to the story, this can mean a death sentence for some women whose family members won’t tolerate such “traipsing” upon family codes of honor.

Naturally, Palestinian Human Rights Organizations are up in arms.

Rightfully so.
