Yom Kippur… silence is golden and good for the environment too…
Not only is the ban on driving on Yom Kippur good for the soul, turns out it’s good for the environment and our health too.
Air pollution in Jerusalem and the Dan region (Tel Aviv) was 100 times less on Yom Kippur than on ordinary days, according to air pollution monitors from the Environment Protection Ministry.
On Sunday the ministry released figures that showed that levels of nitrogen oxide (that terrible stuff that comes out of your exhaust pipe and leads to chronic respiratory problems and a build up in greenhouse gases) in the Dan region over Yom Kippur were two to 12 parts per billion, and rose to 205 parts per billion as soon as the holiday was over. In Jerusalem the afternoon before the holiday, nitrogen oxide levels were 250 parts per billion, and fell to two to 12 parts per billion during the holiday.
No wonder we all we feel so much more relaxed on Yom Kippur. And just think what Israel’s done for its carbon footprint.
Perhaps this is the answer to global warming. Think I’d better start writing letters…
