To Snip or Refrain

Circumcision. Ouch. A hot/controversial topic. In Israel a minority are questioning the practice while Jews outside Israel lean increasingly towards keeping things intact.

This YNet article
reprinted from Reuters informs that circumcision stats have dropped from 86% among North American boys in 1965 to 57% in 2004.

“Circumcision’s out of the closet. It’s not a taboo subject anymore. People are talking about it. Parents are talking about it,” Dr. Mark Reiss, a synagogue-goer in the San Francisco area and executive vice president of Doctors Opposing Circumcision, is quoted as saying.

Among those talking about it is a gaggle of young male Jewish commentators. This year alone in books, online and in magazines authors Neal Pollack, Sam Apple, Jonathan Safran Foer and Shalom Auslander have all fretted about doing to their sons what was done to them. The title of Auslander’s memoir scheduled for publication in October is “Foreskin’s Lament.”

What do you think?

  2. Have you read the Ynet comment section?!!

People are “very descriptive” over the benefits of circumcision or uncircumcision.

One says uncircumcised look better down yonder, while others are saying the circumcised feel much better in bed.

What’s your view about it all?

Note: Most Americans (myself included) are circumcised on the first day, so this debate is rather moot for us.

  4. Mixed. Also from personal experience (with a son). He was born in San Francisco so you can imagine…But living here now, the pressure is more towards “the snip”. I think it depends upon the child and hygiene. I am less religious leaning

  6. Speaking from someone who has experienced both, I’d say it ain’t what you got but how you use it !
