Liberal Leanings
Do liberal attitudes and yeshiva (seminary) life go hand in hand?
If you read A Mother in Israel’s latest entry then it appears so. Read between the lines, that is.
The long of it is that Mother’s 11th grade son was “released” from his high school yeshiva by the headmaster. He was expelled. And yet the headmaster and school somehow didn’t deem it necessary to ring up the parents and let them know. They merely sent the boy home with his pink slip.
Never mind. Junior let mom and dad know the score and they left it to him to decide what to do vis a vis making amends at the institution or choosing an alternate study venue.
For those of you from countries that are more, er, um…communicative in terms of the education system, A Mother’s tale is kind of shocking. I don’t get how the headmaster or someone else could not have phoned the family.

But extending credit and latitude to the boy in choosing his own path is mature and quite liberal on the part of the parents.

Just for the record, the students in my son’s former yeshiva do not dress like those in the picture. In fact, his yeshiva was quite liberal about dress and it was part of the national religious stream, so imagine tshirts and colored kippot for what you see here.
PS. The Wikipedia entry doesn’t discuss a yeshiva high school like my son went to, where secular subjects are studied along with religious ones.
P.S.S. It’s time to update that blogroll :)
