The Shwarma Wars

Gourmet chocolatiers may be popping up on every Tel Aviv city block these days but shwarma remains a serious staple to be reckoned with.

So serious that shwarma vendors are going head to head and playing dirty.

Over the weekend, a popular-among-soldiers shwarma eatery in Tel Aviv’s center suffered arson damage after an explosion was heard inside the venue (it was closed at the time) and the finger of the law is pointing at the across-the-street shwarma restaurant owner/competitor.

In fact, the 55-year-old guy across the street has been apprehended and a full investigation is underway, says a local Hebrew daily.

Suspicions are strong because the suspected arsonists – three of them – bungled the job. When they tried to blow up the damaged venue, they were caught – one was hospitalized in serious condition – and admitted to their “arsonist for hire” positions.

Genius.
