Trick This Treat

I admit: The one U.S. holidays I truly miss is Halloween.

I know it’s Pagan and that it celebrates All Hallow’s Eve and all that. But heck, I’m really not all too bothered by religious or non-religious associations. I’m not religious.

Halloween’s cool because it’s FUN! There’s planning costumes and sewing costumes, going to parties and if you have a kid to take along or you ARE a kid, it’s Trick or Treating.

Any of you who grew up going house to house i.e. trick or treating knows what that excitement entailed: toting a plastic or paper container for the loot, reluctantly ringing bells, discussing what each neighbor had doled out after the front door shut – “Missus Hitchins ALWAYS gives us stale Tootsie Rolls! I almost broke a tooth last year!” ….or “Cool! Haunted House at Doc Stern’s! Jimmy said it’s scarier than last year. I wonder if he’ll be giving out Sugar Daddy’s again…”

Then getting home and dumping the loot on the living room floor for sorting: best of the best, so/so and “save until desperate” piles. When mom or dad invariably stole a piece from the copious domes, feigned protests resonated.

*sigh* I miss Halloween. Now that I’m a parent, who the heck do I get to swipe a piece from living here in Israel? (Of candy. Candy! ahem)

But keep the faith, boyz and girlz. Halloween this year can be had in Tel Aviv, yes indeedy.

At Socca Club in Kikar Atarim. Halloween Night (This Wednesday the 31st). Costumes mandatory. Prizes. Loot. And maybe even candy (!) http://www.israelity.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/halloween%20party.jpg

  2. I do miss the candy (although it is fattening so probably better that I miss it) but you neglect that we do have Purim – time to dress in costume, pig out on candy and pastries, and, for us older ones, a time for a little drink.

    Just sayin’

  4. You’re right. But it’s DIFFERENT (!) No doubt Purim is costumes, fun etc. But Halloween…well it’s simply Halloween…*sigh*

  6. True true. In honor of Halloween I had a Kit Kat yesterday. I do wish there was more candy around this time of the hyear. Of course, I wish it was fall around this time of the year: :)

But first I’m aiming for New Years as a holiday before Halloween

  8. Remember how there was always a dentist living in the neighborhood who would hand out little toothbrushes instead of candy? Definitely not one of your more popular houses on Halloween…

  10. Nope. We really didn’t like those ones. Or the ones who made homemade stuff that had to be taken away. *sigh*

  12. We also have a holiday connected to sweet things. It is called Channukah.

The Americanization of Israel is not something to be welcomed.

  14. I don’t want Israel Americanization. I simply miss Halloween. That’s it.
