Summer Vacation Evaporating

We are now at DAY 21 of the teachers’ strike in Israel. And it’s significant because today is pay day for striking teachers. They’ll be paid – funds and preemptive measures were set up ahead of the strike. But paychecks are going to be 2/3 “lighter”.

Bored and listless teens are starting to cause trouble. You know: Vandalism, roaming the streets, public fighting – the sort of stuff that goes hand in hand with boredom and listlessness.

Teachers are resolute but feeling the effects. One Hebrew daily profiles a teacher who has taken on work as a supermarket cashier to make ends meet.

“I thought it would end quickly – within a week. But I’ve got mortgage payments to make and bills. It’s minimum wage but I don’t have a choice”

Newspaper images of Education Minister Yuli Tamir depict exhaustion; her eyes are bloodshot and red-rimmed and she looks pretty darned concerned.

Bottom line: You think the kids are bored now? Wait until summer when they’re in class and angry.
