Cellphone Ringing? Pay Up!

What happens if you’re in synagogue and your mobile phone rings?

If you’re in Israel’s upper Galilee town of Safed, you get fined.

According to Hebrew press reports, things were getting so bad on the local synagogue scene with cellphones ringing and people actually answering calls and holding conversations during prayer that the powers-that-be decided to get proactive.

Initially town rabbis voted to install metal detectors at entrances to synagogues to keep devices off-premises altogether. But the costs were prohibitive so they opted for instituting fines instead.

The toll? NIS 10 ($2.50) for violations.

Quiet in the House!

  2. Interesting! You might like to know there is an electronic product called Cellphone Detector Plus that detects unauthorised cellphones within a given area and can sound off a user recorded voice message asking the prohibited phone user to switch off their cellphone. There are quite a few audio-visual alert options. It is housed in a rugged, compact and attractive enclosure, it can be fixed to a wall or set above a false ceiling, hidden in a desk or simply placed on a shelf according to users preference.
