Lost in space

Oooh, step right up. Tickets for the first space commercial space flight have just gone on sale in IsraelHave scoured my piggy bank, and… well, I guess I won’t be making the trip.

Tickets for the Virgin Galactic flight cost $200,000 a go and according to Eliron Yaron, director of Galactic Dreamlines, the Israeli franchise of Virgin Galactic, most Israelis interested in the flight are businessmen “who like new experiences and adventures.”

So far 200 tickets have been sold in 121 countries, and 500 more seats are available for the fabulously rich and adventurous of money.

Interestingly, this seems to be a man’s thing – the average traveler is 50-55 years old and male. (I swear today’s mid-life crisis begins at 50.) Only 15% of ticket-holders are women.

The flight is due for take off at the end of 2009, start of 2010 and will last two hours with six minutes of weightlessness. $100,000 an hour – what a bargain.

  4. Hey, Steph – maybe you could do it, assuming that space suits also come in petite sizes! :-)

  6. Eh, who wants to go to space. There’s too many places on earth I’d like to see.
And at the rate we’re going environmentally, many of these places just won’t exist in a few years.
    Space’ll always be out there.
    Actually, it’s probably all we’ll have left…
