School Strike: One Month

November 11, 2007 - 1:00 PM by

Here we are, a month into the national teachers’ strike and the absolute biggest losers by far are the high school kids missing an education.

And the stalemate marches on.

What are the main sticking points?

According to Hebrew daily Maariv:

- The Teachers Union wants an immediate 15% pay increase. The government wants to give 10%.
- The government wants to immediately add multiple hours to the curriculum as part of an education reform. The teachers want a gradual increase in teaching hours.
- The teachers want a 60% pay increase for the proposed reform increase; the government is offering 26% (to which the teachers have agreed)
- Teachers want a gradual decrease in class sizes and the government wants to appoint a fact finding committee to investigate class size

Regardless, time is not standing still and kids feel like the government doesn’t care.

This is like a snow day scenario from hell.
