Doughnut prices rising
Wouldn’t you know it. Hannukah begins this week and the price of soufganiyot (those outragous heart-stopping, artery-clogging jelly doughnuts you just can’t do hannukah without) has doubled.
True, no-one really eats these doughnuts at any other time of the year and doughnut makers have gotta make a living, but still…
According to one report, in some places prices of jelly doughnuts have risen to NIS 5 – that’s more than a dollar each.
I try to steer clear of doughnuts generally, whatever the price, but I’ve got a weakness for Roladin’s gourmet doughnuts filled with whipped cream, or dulche de leche, or banana cream.
Then there’s the ones my Moroccan mother-in-law makes – dough rings cooked in hot oil, smothered in icing sugar, and eaten hot and fresh.
Must get the recipe for those. Will share it here if I can. But beware, she doesn’t do precise quantities. I once tried to make a chocolate cake of hers.
“So how much flour do I need?”
“About this much cherie…” She replied, shaking an indiscriminate amount of flour into the bowl.
“And eggs?”
“Four, maybe five or six.”

MMM! Donuts! I wish there was still Dunkin Donuts in Israel.
I promised myself, only 1 sufganiya over the whole holiday – not going to happen, since I need to get in a year’s worth of donut consumption in one week (well, the few months that it’s out). Of course, one donut is more than a year’s worth of fat consumption.
Yes, it’s amazing that the bakeries don’t come up with a reduced fat doughnut.
Could be a great marketing ploy.
Half the fat of normal doughnuts – I’d go for that.
I’m not in the least bit tempted to eat a donut. There is too much donut and not enough filling. When I was in high school in New Jersey I worked at Dunkin’ Donuts. Now, those were donuts!! The manager used to yell at me cause I would put too much cream in the donuts!! A perk of the job was that I could take home the donuts that were left over at the end of the day!
Hey Nicky – Lechem Erez has low-fat doughnuts. The dough is baked instead of fried, so it’s kind of a brioche shell with filling.
Thanks Lisa – that’s good to know.
All this talk of donuts and Dunkin’Donuts is giving me an appetite.
i remember when they were 20 aguroth
20 agurot!! Geeyad!
