Soufganiyot: The Facts
Ok, here we go. The definitive facts about soufganiyot (jammy donuts to you guys).
According to the Manufacturer’s Association Israel 17.5 million ($14.04 million) soufganiyot will be sold and eaten during the coming holiday – which starts tomorrow. And the average Israeli will eat three donuts during the week. (Since so many people don’t eat donuts I hate to think what some people are putting away.)
Sounds a lot, but it’s much less than last year apparently, says the MAI. Soufganiyot sales are going to drop 4% on 2006 because of health reasons.
The MAI survey also suggested that 30% of the soufganiyot sold – some 6 million of the calorific beasts – will be fun-sized, weighing in at 35 grams, instead of 80 grams.
In the meantime, Hannukah candle sales are going up. This year’s festival is likely to see $1.17 million in candle sales – a 10% rise on last year.
Frankly I think it’s probably a response to the many electricity cuts we’ve been having lately.
