And the Winners Are…

During the recent 2-month long teacher’s strike in Israel, a writer, editor or combination of both over at one of Israel’s Hebrew dailies decided to take on a project: Cast out a net of “HELP!” letters to Israel’s members of parliament and sit back and wait for the yield.

The deets: The editorial side over at Maariv daily sent out letters to 120 Parliament members signed by “a 17-year-old high school student lacking financial resources and begging for help in order to graduate.”

The results?

Most of the MK’s didn’t respond. 48 offered help. Want the dirt?

- Foreign Minister Tzippi Livni – Donated her daughters books
- Education Minister Yuli Tamir’s office: “We didn’t get the letter”
- Shas Party leader Eli Yishai - Attached a 200 shekel bill ($50) to his reply letter
- Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office – We’re looking into the matter
- Former Labor Party leader Amir Peretz – Invited the letter writer to his office for a personal meeting
- Likud Party Chairman Benjamin Netanyahu – No response to the letter. No comment
- Shai Charmash of Kadimah Party – Asked to donate from his personal account
