No Smoke/No Dice
Some of Israel’s cigarette smoking population isn’t exactly taking kindly to the recently passed anti-smoking law barring the habit in cafes, restaurants and bars.
“Why in the heck shouldn’t I be able to have a pint and a cigarette?” bellows Tel Aviv resident Victor.
Well because the bartender and other patrons shouldn’t have to absorb 2nd hand smoke, that’s why. But that’s my two shekels…
Can’t light up? Then protest!
Victor’s contemporaries are banding together in Tel Aviv come January to publicly demonstrate displeasure with the new law.
Tuesday January 15 there’ll be a mass gathering in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square under the banner “We Won’t Take This Sitting Down. Solidarity Against the Law Prohibiting Smoking in Pubs”…to demonstrate against “an unrealistic law that didn’t work in England and won’t work here.”

Starts at 15:00. If you’re on Facebook, you can find details and sign up there.
Another two shekels? Save your breath – literally, in this case. The government cost of covering cigarette smoking related illness far outweighs the inconvenience of having to step outside for a few minutes.
The law isn’t going to change.

Unfortunately (and I say this as a non-smoker but someone who believes in civil liberties and human rights) the smoking ban HAS worked in England – people obey it like sheep and don’t even question it, let alone protest against it. Good luck with the protest there !
It worked in California/the U.S. too. Grumblings at first, of course. But I think this is wishful thinking. And like I wrote, the gov’t won’t go for a repeal. It’s not cost effective.
Good riddance. Smoking is nasty anyways, not to mention expensive (as some will go through more packs of cigarettes in a day than most people will through a single pack of gum).
Not to mention the fact that it isn’t healthy for your lungs…
