Sylvester Sparklers
O’er here in these parts, the New Year is referred to as “Sylvester”… Not like the cartoon character or the American disco drag queen.

Sylvester as in St. Sylvester, a pope around the 300′s who, rumor has it, cured Roman Emperor Constantine I of leprosy. Somehow with the passing of years, December 31 came to be known in Europe as St. Sylvester’s Feast Day, hence the term in Europe and Israel (?) for New Year’s Eve.
Enough of the history lesson. We’re really here to talk about what to drink on that most joyous of evenings, i.e. tomorrow night (!).
The Israeli Wine Blog tells us that there are a number of Israel grown and raised sparkling wines to choose from for ringing in 2008…It’s worth a trip to the site for a wee pre-party consultation.
Bottoms Up!

I recently heard that Pope Sylvester was an anti-semite. I have tried to research it, but haven’t been able to find anything. Anyone have any information?
