Taking a Loan for Veggies

Think Israel’s current record cold wave is gonna make next month’s electric bill soar?

Wait until you hit the fruit and vegetable vendor.

Agriculture has been hit hard by the low temps and the results are crop losses and increased prices. Way way increased.

According to Hebrew press reports, fruit & veggies hit particularly hard by the latest frosts have tripled in price.

Which ones and how much?

Zucchini (courgette) – Was: 4.5 shekels ($1.20) per kilo Now: 18 shekels ($4.80)
Eggplant – Was: 4 shekels per kilo Now: 8.5 shekels
White Cabbage – Was: 1.4 shekels per kilo Now: 3.3 shekels
Cucumbers – Were: 2.4 shekels per kilo Now: 7.5 shekels

And the grand prize goes to Strawberries: Before the frost: NIS20 per kilo…After: 50 shekels per kilo (That’s $13.50!!)

But if you thought your wallet is hurting, think of the farmers: They’re asking the government to declare the frosts a Natural Disaster in order to collect compensation for their losses.

  2. I have seen $4.00 where I live which equals to $8.80/kilo.
    So, $13.00 is nasty expensive.
Of course, the fruit here doesn’t have half the taste of fruit at home.
