Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons announced the establishment of a $5.75-million scholarship fund for African students, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, yesterday.
The Advancing Africa Scholarship Fund is being paid for by Israeli businessman Idan Ofer, a parent of a Brown student and chairman of one of Israel’s largest investment-holding and shipping companies, Israel Corp.
The scholarships are designed to allow undergraduate students from sub-Saharan Africa to study at Brown and return to their home countries to help address the continent’s critical needs, according to a statement.
