To the Kindergarten: 21st Floor, Please

In keeping with urban trends like planting rooftop gardens atop multi-story buildings, Tel Aviv’s mayor is asking the Education Ministry for permits to move city kindergartens to high rise buildings.

Public land is a commodity short in supply in the beach-hugging city and the mayor wants to get the biggest bang-for-buck by taking out entire levels of high rise buildings and dedicating them to the education of wee ones.

That includes building a flexi-floor “indoor playground” for recreation time.

Mayor Huldai backed up the request put forth to Israel Education Minister Yuli Tamir with stats: Over the past three years, 6,000 new families per annum have moved to the city. 25 new kindergartens were built last year and another 25 will be built in the coming year
