Barack Talks

February 27, 2008 - 5:23 PM by

You’ve probably seen them. The e-mail messages making the rounds about Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

You know the ones…they talk about his Muslim upbringing, his radical leanings, picture him in Muslim-esque garb.

And then you also may have heard that Louis Farrakhan has publicly endorsed Obama…

Hmmmm, utter pro-Israel types or those who adhere to the Jewish faith.

Ladies & Gentlemen: Mr. O has spoken. To the Jews. In Cleveland and now in Israel via an interview granted to Israel’s Hebrew daily Yediot Ahronot.

Allison of Pajamas Media is carrying a few prelude quotes from the interview carried in today’s press. The excerpts are teasers for the full megillah scheduled to run in the paper’s weekend edition this Friday.

A sampling:

…the Jewish community and Israel fears that because of your Muslim background you will favor the Arab side in the Middle East conflict. How do you respond?

“First of all, it is important to state the facts: I am not a Muslim and I never have been. I never studied at a Madrassa and I have never sworn on the Koran. I am committed to Christianity. For four years I lived in Indonesia as a child and I studied at a secular school. When I am sworn in, I do it on a Bible that belongs to my family. Those who know the facts do not doubt my commitment to Israel’s security and my commitment to the U.S. relationship with Israel….

  2. Thanks for the link, Stephanie. I headed over to and read Allison’s post. She does a nice round-up but I did leave a comment because I wanted to help better characterize the Jewish population in Ohio – it is not really a key vote. Most of the Jews in Ohio, the bulk at least, live in the NEOhio area. Cuyahoga County has 1.3 million people and there are about 80,000 Jews in the county – obviously not all of voting age, or Democrats for that matter, of course!

My rabbi was at the meeting this past Sunday and a transcript of the meeting was done by JTA on Monday, 2/25 – you can read more here.

I feel that Obama has commented more than enough on his positions. I am satisfied – that is, I don’t feel he needs to add to what’s out there – there’s enough for me to draw conclusions about how he might act and how he feels.

I hope other Jews feel the same and we can continue on in determining who will be in office a year from now! :)

    Thanks.

  4. Mr. Obama: When you are a member of a church that exposés this kind of hate, do you find another church or do you accept the views as true?

Pastor Wright is a supporter of Louis Farrakhan (who called Judaism a “gutter religion” and depicted Jews as “bloodsuckers”) and traveled with him to visit Col. Muammar
al-Gaddafi, archenemy of Israel’s and a terror supporter.

Most recently, as head of the UN Security CouncilGaddafi prevented condemnation of attacks against Israel. As Kyle-Anne Shriver noted,

The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan received the “Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. Lifetime Achievement Trumpeteer” Award at the 2007 Trumpet Gala at the United
    Church of Christ.

Obama calls Jeremiah Wright a “mentor”

I judge people by the company they keep!

  6. I was somewhat concerned about Obama’s apparent lack-of-will in terms of confronting terrorism (i.e., his desire to surrender to terrorists in Iraq by turning tail) and his apparent poor judgment in foreign relations (i.e., his ill-advised unilateral threat to carpet bomb tribal areas of Pakistan), but I was considering him.

Now, I would never vote for Obama… not with the uber racist Farrakhan’s endorsement and Obama’s repeated commitment to the Black Value System adopted by his church, which while admirable in it’s statements to lift up the circumstances of black Americans also includes a tenet that describe white America as ‘captors’ who ‘subjugate’ blacks and strive keep them [blacks] ignorant. I have a real problem with voting for someone who’s belief system would be considered radically racist if ‘white’ were substituted for ‘black’.
