Check & Double Check

As a consumer, this blurb is the kind of thing you DON’T want to read in your local newspaper.

But informed is involved. Check your prices against the register ring up, folks. Scary.

A Haifa court has fined the Super-Sol supermarket chain NIS 471,000 for misleading consumers and for 17 other offenses, including using prices at the cash register that didn’t match price labeling on products. The offenses were discovered throughout northern Israel, at several Super-Sol outlets. It was the highest fine ever imposed in the country for these types of offenses. Five top Super-Sol executives were personally fined a combined NIS 9,000 in the case. This chain may have problems learning its lesson: It was fined NIS 450,000 for misleading consumers in October 2006.

Half a million ($137,000) fine? NIS9000 ($2500) to be split between five executives? Peanuts.

Thanks, big felafel, for the heads up.

The Neighbors Too

You think we have it bad over here what with our light snowfall that threw part of the country into a tizzy this past week? Which, by the way, would be expected because after all this IS the Middle East where snow SHOULDN’T be falling so snowfall removal plans aren’t exactly budgeted into municipal coffers.

China’s in trouble. A lot of trouble. Think good karmic thoughts to send in that direction because getting stranded in the freezing cold without electricity while food and water supplies dwindle is horrible.

Here, on the other hand, are our next-door neighbors. How-dee! Mind if I borrow your snow shovel? No? Okay. How about a cup of sugar?

A picture is, indeed, worth a whole bunch of words. Or at least one blog entry.
