Woman’s Day Under Attack (again)

March 6, 2008 - 5:30 PM by

Yesterday we brought you the fridge’s grumblings over the program Israel’s female parliament members were “treated to” for International Women’s Day.

The grumblings continue. This time from attorneys outraged over the choice of forum Tel Aviv’s Bar Association Committee is offering female legals for the day:

A gathering including
- Jewelry sales
- Beauty enhancement and cosmetics booths
- A keynote lecture on “styling” by celebrity beauty consultant Miki Buganim

“Is this, in the committee members’ opinion, the image presented by the average female attorney? Are those the topics the legal committee wishes to expound upon?” outraged lawyers asked in a letter and petition to the committee.

Protesting attorneys say International Women’s Day on March 8 marks the date in 1857 when hundreds of New York textile workers went on strike to protest low pay and lacking work conditions.

“We should be addressing sexual harassment, workplace equality and inequity in society. Styling is not the way to mark the day,” petitioners wrote.
