Confession time:

During growing up years, annually televised Miss Universe/Miss World Pageants were events worthy of month-long build-up anticipation and excitement at Chez Steph & Co. culminating in the never disappointing Saturday night airing.

Remember crib sheets? Scoring contestants? Matching wits against the judges? Or better yet, wagering a week’s allowance against a sibling over who would take the crown? And secretly pulling for Miss Israel every year because the household politics instilled that sort of pride?

I wasn’t watching the pageants in 1969 but never mind. This is some classic, albeit bad quality, viewing. And if you feel for semi-finalist Miss Israel’s stumble over “hospitality”, catch Miss Korea’s “God Bless You” wish.

(And try refraining from thinking about world politics in 1969 as you watch China and Korea speak)
