This next one isn’t necessarily Israel-centric but it does have to do with our U.S. brethren across the pond.

And at the end of the day, we’re all just one big Happy Family, no?

Israel Matzav
reports that Kosher eatin’ Red Sox fans won’t have to go hungry anymore when hitting a game at Fenway Park.

The Boston Herald reports that an automated vending machine in the concourse under the bleachers will be dispensing kosher dogs.

Fenway already sells Hebrew National kosher dogs, but those are “kosher-style” and aren’t prepared, packaged, shipped and cooked under supervision of a rabbi or kosher-certification agency.

The hot dogs in the “Hot Nosh” vending machine will be.

Shea and Yankee Stadiums have kosher concession stands and the Red Sox often receive requests for kosher food at Fenway.

The team’s concessionaire, Aramark, says they’ll start with one “Hot Nosh” machine, and may add more, depending on capacity and demand.

Leave it to Israel’s politicians to get a point across in a grandiose manner.

Blogger This is Israel spotted the following news item on the National News site:

Olmert’s Cabinet Meets In Cave To Support Environment

(IsraelNN.com) Prime Minister Ehud Olmert convened his Cabinet in a Galilean nature reserve Sunday to show support for environmental awareness in Israel.

Instead of their regular weekly meeting in Israel’s capital city, the cabinet met in a large cave in Beit Shearim, a nature reserve housing the tomb of Talmudic sage Yehuda Hanassi.

Olmert said the meeting hoped “to tell all of the country’s citizens that we love the country and its natural resources, and that these must be safeguarded as a matter of routine.” During the meeting, the cabinet passed two resolutions earmarking funds for camping sites and bicycle tracks in Israel.

Okay. Was that an April Fool’s thingie?

No?

Yikes.

Single, Jewish, PANIC!

What current trends are showing up in Jewish dating circles? What’s happening statistic-wise on the Jewish interfaith coupling and marriage scene? What are “Singles on the Street” reporting?

Writer Sarah Bronson lends an informative view of the Jewish Singles Scene in her story “The Missing Piece” in today’s World Jewish Digest. A sampling:

What is commonly referred to as the Jewish “singles crisis,” and in Orthodox communities as the “shidduch crisis,” appears to affect women more drastically than men, both practically and emotionally. Both statistical and anecdotal evidence provided by sociologists, matchmakers, lay leaders and singles themselves paints a picture of a dating scene in which many more women than men attend Jewish singles events; more women actively use Jewish dating sites; matchmakers are flooded with applications from women; and single Jewish women in their late 20′s and 30′s are panicking.

As well they should be, sociologists say. As difficult as the “dating scene” can be for many men, it is often more challenging for the fairer sex, especially in the Jewish community. Jewish women, particularly Orthodox ones, are even more likely than non-Jewish women to be caught in the “age squeeze,” the phenomenon of women in their 20′s who think they have plenty of time to get married, only to discover in their 30′s that men their age prefer to date younger women. What’s more, highly educated and professionally accomplished Jewish women have a harder time finding mates because their achievements and success can be intimidating to potential partners.

Targeting Prostitution

Tearful testimony this week resulted in a halt to action that would institutionalize prostitution in Israel.

According to Hebrew press, when members of the Sub-Committee for the War Against Female Trafficking heard testimonies from two former prostitutes, they decided to halt steps aimed at formalizing the “oldest profession in the world”.

“Prostitution stamps out your soul,” former prostitute ‘Rachel’ testified before the committee. “No woman comes to this by choice. And no woman makes money from it. It’s not worth the despair and heartbreak.”

The way to battle this is by prosecuting the clients, broadening social system safety nets, increasing rehabilitation programs and improving/creating shelters for women. It’s not by institutionalizing the profession, one cabinet minister responded.
