Sixty years ago, on the Friday afternoon of May 14th 1948, David Ben Gurion read out the scroll of the Establishment of the State of Israel. writes Dutchblog Israel (who also blogs in Dutch, surprise surprise).

… the reading took 16 minutes. That certainly was a good reason to recite the Shehecheyanu blessing: ” Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has kept us in life, sustained us, and brought us to this moment.”

  2. What would Dutch Blog you say when the Jews were “brought” to the ovens of Auschwitz, the camps of Bergen-Belsen and Treblinka.

What “blessing” is recited when God stood by and allowed the nazis to use dogs to rip little Jewish children apart?

With respect, it was the efforts and dying of Israeli soldiers that won Independence, not God.

  4. Apparently DJ misses the true meaning of the SheHecheyanu blessing.

For Israel and I – Fifteen Dutchmen and -women and their relationship with a 60-year-old, a book that will be published next month, I interviewed 15 Dutch well known writers, politicians, journalists etc., Jewish and non-Jewish, about their connection to Israel. One of them, a survivor of Auschwitz, told me with tears in her ( and my ) eyes how she sat next to the radio on November 29th 1947 when the UN vote about the partition plan was broadcast live: “That I, a little girl from the camp, had been able to live to see this!” That is the essence of this blessing in this case, I believe. As a Jew you do not have to be religious or to believe in God to say the blessing or to understand its true meaning.
