Keren Ann’s Hebrew transition

By now, we are all familiar with Yael Naim’s crossover success from Hebrew singer/songwriter to English singer/songwriter. There have been numerous Israeli bands who have either made that transition or started out performing only in English, albeit without the success of Naim. But what about the other way around? Has there been an English speaking singer/songwriter who transitioned into Hebrew successfully?

Yeah actually. Keren Ann.

Keren Ann (born Keren Ann Zeigler) lived in Israel and the Netherlands until the age of eleven when her parents relocated to France. She’s had a successful career in both France and America with her sultry neo-folk meets pop-jazz sounds. A couple of summers ago during the second Lebanon war, she brought her dream pop sounds to bomb shelters and army bases throughout the country to boost morale. While she was her she fell in love with an air force pilot and decided to call Israel her third home (the first two being Paris and New York).

Her music is mostly in French and English but Keren Ann’s first Hebrew language song can be found on the new Avodav Ivrit 60 album, a compilation of old school Israeli songs covered by contemporary artists in honor of the Israel’s 60th birthday. She does a stellar job “On the Street of Pure Souls” a Nathan Cohen track from the late seventies.
