The recycle-able shopping bag has entered the Israeli supermarket scene. They’re green, they’re roomy and the ones from the Supersol chain even sport a plastic bottom, for sturdier packing and carrying. And, they only cost NIS 6 per bag. It’s really a bargain and they’re much more comfortable than the plastic bags with the handles that dig into your palms as you shlep bag upon bag into the house.

I had been waiting for several weeks for my local Supersol Deal to restock the bags, as they’d run out of them weeks earlier.
When I saw them stacked on the shelf, I grabbed eight, proudly packing my groceries in their new green home. The comments abounded as I wheeled my cart out to the parking lot, with more than one fellow customer staring enviously at my greened wagon.

And note, they’re also great gifts for Israel-loving friends who want to sport a Supersol bag rather than Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s. You can spend more on canvas ones being made by various Israeli designers — we bought the Tikiya for several friends, a set of canvas bags that come in their own pouch, but they’re small and there’s no Hebrew writing on them. Whereas the Supersol Green Bag, as it’s officially named, proudly sports the Supersol logo and the words “Supersol’s Green Basket, the bag that’s friendly to the environment and meant for repeat usage.” It sounds better in Hebrew.

I can’t vouch for the environmentalibility of the bag itself; and knowing this land, it could very well be not the best thing for the landfill. But this is a place where change takes time, and you gotta applaud the small steps.

  2. Giving the Super-Sol bag to friends outside Israel is a GREAT idea! BTW: The bag begins to degrade into bright green dust if you leave it in the sun for several weeks – I learned this the hard way!

  4. A few years ago I bought some reusable bags from France – these are huge great shopping bags – wonderful stuff when you’re buying for a family.
Everywhere I went, people asked me where I got them.

Am so glad these bags have finally made it to Israel, even in the smaller format.
