Bangle it

Here’s what you need to be putting on your arm this summer — sorry, this is mostly for girls — the fab-o resin bangle bracelets designed by Israeli artist Orna Lalo. You may already recognize her key rings, mobile phone decorations and candlesticks; to be honest, I was getting kinda tired of them. But who knew…she’s been designing jewelry for some time and it just hadn’t yet come my way.

Made of industrial resin — which makes them fairly indestructible — all the pieces are brightly translucent or opaque and often feature funky patterns, beads or writing. The bracelets, like all her pieces, are light and great for sweaty weather because you barely feel them on your arm. Granted, you may want to take them off when you’re clacking away at the keyboard or washing dishes, but then again, you may not.

According to Lalo, no two pieces are identical in shape or color — which is one of the reasons my sister and I bought them for ourselves and some other loved ones at our favorite local gift store — but they are produced in Bulgaria, a slight disappointment for moi, who likes to buy blue-and-white whenever possible. And in order not to be a geek like me, be sure to take off the small chain that groups the bangles together; otherwise it’s kind of like leaving on the label that’s sewn on the sleeve of your new winter coat. Tres gauche.

    2. Just saw some of Orna Lalo’s jewelry and keyrings in Berlin this weekend. She’s obviously beginning to sell further and further afield.

    I got my first Orna Lalo bracelet about 14 years ago. She’s the friend of one of my sister-in-law’s friends (or something like that…) and used to sell out of her own store just off Shenkein. Wonder if that store’s still there?
