Yemin Moshe gets a second wind

Yemin MosheAt the end of the ’70s Israeli film Ani Yerushalmi, a gentle and loving tribute to the quiet grandeur of the Holy City, beloved, family-friendly star of sound and screen Yehoram Gaon gathers up a passel of tousle-haired children for a horse-drawn carriage tour of Jerusalem as they sing together “Hasar Montefiore,” a song in praise of the great vision and largess of Sir Moses Montefiore, a towering figure who ranks only slightly below David in the annals of Jerusalem’s history.

Perhaps Gaon should prepare the children to sing once again. A Jewish American has donated a half of million dollars to the city of Jerusalem to renovate the historic windmill of Yemin Moshe in Jerusalem reports Ynet. The windmill is the neighborhood’s most prominent landmark, visible (at height) from much of Jerusalem. The windmill was poorly engineered and never functioned properly, but it served as a symbol of the development of Jerusalem, which rapidly snowballed after Yemin Moshe was established. Now, 151 years later, the windmill will return to its former glory and bask in the glorious winds of Jerusalem….scratch that, there apparently isn’t enough wind in Jerusalem these days for the windmill to properly function… they’ll be using electricity.

  2. Jerusalem is where the Knesset is located, right? And there isn’t enough wind there? Do they have it pointed correctly?
