Skirt it

fall-2008-pantone.jpgNew York Fashion Week is over, which means we now know that skirts are very in for this fall, particularly if they’re slim-fitting and detailed with mucho draping, layers and texture.

It’s a trend that had already been called last spring by Israeli designers, who don’t follow the fall/winter, spring/summer seasons quite as much as their European and American counterparts — partially due to the fact that Israel’s warmer winters don’t call for the same number of sweaters and wooly fabrics –  and because the fashion runway hasn’t happened here yet.

But, nevertheless, a number of Israeli designers are featuring skirts throughout their fall collections, with some very fetching offerings. Starting with the Castro chain, designer Shahar Danziger calls the company’s fall look “London Street,” with lots of red, black and white checks, as well as kilts in tweeds and tartans.

Retro designer Naama Bezalel is channeling the 1950s and 1960s in her fall look, with her usual A-line look in crisp, heavy cottons in fall-like colors, while veteran designer Gershon Bram is playing with geometric shapes and layers in his almost summery collection. Slim skirts are everywhere, finally leading us away from the overkill of A-line that we’ve had over the last few years, although Ronen Chen is still showing bubble skirts, as are several others. And as Israeli fashion blogger Afuna (Hebrew for pea, a play on ofna, the term for fashion), points out, it’s all about long jackets and short skirts together, and always, always, paired with boots.

Get shopping, people.
