Love that story. I think all of us immigrants had something like this. I was picked up hitching by Raful when he was Aluf Pikud Tzafon, I think I was in the Army for about a year or so by then. I think I forgot to salute. Also, Boogie was a MemMem in my Plughat Tzanchanim back in 1975.

If you don't mind, I have to add another funny story. When I decided to join the Army back in 1974, I had no clue, so people told me, go to Nachal, there are lots of Anglo Saxim there. I had no idea what Nachal was. When I got to Bakum and got my gear, I met with a Rav Seren who told me that I only had to serve 18 months due to being 19 and an immigrant. I said, no, I want full service to which he signed me up on the spot. He then asked me where I was from and when I replied Canada, he said yes, I understand, Sabras don't come here and ask for more. He must have had a good chuckle with his friends afterwards about this.

Eventually I discovered what Nachal meant, and asked to be assigned to Tzanchanim instead.

Freaking hilarious.
I was attached to the 401, but our job was "Mista-aravim" in the Shati and Jeblaya refugee camps.
I had a similar exchange with Yom Tov Samiya when he was the head of the Gaza division in 1993.
Not quite on your scale but the same conversation.

Quick question: Was your platoon commander an Anglo immigrant?

Regards

I served in 188 (your northern neighbor) in the mid 80's. Aren't tanks wonderful? ;)
Mofaz addressed our reserve unit just before we deployed in Gush Etzion in 2001.
