On reflection the above comment may have sounded harsh - therefore let me add the reason why happily Israel finds itself in such a position is because Zahal has been an affective and determined force.

The great pity is that it would have been even more effective if the world, including a timid [sadly] United States did not indulge in ethical double standards.

And today July 4th, America celebrates its birthday, but it is in my view far away from the nation that its Founders envisaged.

It is no longer a place to come to, but is now essentially just another nation.

Lets not be melodramatic over military service. These days Israeli soldiers other than the really elite troops, are unlikely to face any form of battle compared to what it was like years ago in the 1960's through to the 1980's. The real danger to Israel today comes from the skies.......

And when I went - from a kibbutz - it was an event viewed with pride and no form of "worrying parents".

We went as a group and many of the ben meshek went through army training and combat together.

These days in the mddle and near east it is the American soldier that faces immediate combat in Afghanistan and the other pest holes of the world in the grip of militant Islam.

you beat me to the punch on this one! i attended two graduations this month, the h.s. graduation of my older stepdaughter and the sixth grade graduation of my younger stepdaughter. both were long, very long, and equally charming, frustrating and personal in their own way. and as different from the u.s. graduations as they could possibly be.
