As a former member of United Synagogue Youth, a Conservative Jewish youth group in North America, I helped to raise the money for the Yeshiva in Uganda. Of the hundreds of thousands of dollars that we raised two years ago for our Tikun Olam fund, USY's leadership (all teens like myself) voted to donate $15,000 (by far the largest contribution to any one cause) to the Abayudaya to build a Yeshiva and a library. USY's International President and the Executive Vice President of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USY's parent organization) visited the Abayudaya last summer and reported back to USY about their adventures at the 2008 International Convention of USY. I have a personal connection to these Ugandan Jews.
