I’m really enjoying a new piece of jewelry gifted to me by my friend Esther. It’s actually not so new, we bought it back in September on a pre-birthday outing, but sometimes you need to revisit something on a regular basis to remember how much you loved it when you first got it.

Besides picking it out together, which in itself is always a pleasurable mission, we got it — my letter ‘S’ necklace — at a boutique that was new to us in Gan Hachashmal, Paula Bianco. The owner’s name isn’t actually Paula, and she’s not actually Italian either, although maybe she’d like to be, like the rest of us. She’s an Israeli whose name is actually Smadar-Pola Azriel, but the name of her jewelry was inspired by her late grandmother, a common and endearing element among many of the young Israeli designer set.

paualabianco scarfSmadar started out designing scarves, deconstructing old sweaters into these fabulous scarves that are not traditional two-ended knitted lengths but are a wide ring that can be looped around the neck. At the time, she was actually an interior designer, but her success with the scarves gave her the push she needed to leave furniture and get into accessories.

She now has a collection of jewelry that is all costume, and revolves around great details, such as retro buttons, ribbon, pieces of pottery and singular beads. The result? Bold, whimsical necklaces, rings, earrings and headbands and who knows what else is down the line. And, of course, the scarves, which always come in handy in the fickle Israeli winters.

Head to the Paula Bianco flagship, 12 Harakevet Street, Gan Hachashmal. Paula Bianco is also sold at Harvey Nichols and Colette in Paris (I know, posh), and at Bergdoff Goodman in New York.
