Where’s Bob?

It seems like everyone – and his wife – is coming to perform in Israel this year. In addition to the highly celebrated upcoming shows by world class rock and pop entertainers – Elton John, Rod Stewart, Rhiana, the Pixies, Elvis Costello, Joan Armatrading, and Metallica – there’s also many more artists on the way.

Recent weeks have seen the announcements of shows by – Kool & the Gang, K’s Choice, Yngwie Malmsteen, Chris Barron of The Spin Doctors and loads more. The latest to book concerts in Israel are r&b Nigerian-British singer Seal and Canadian jazzy pianist and singer Diana Krall.
Seal will be performing at the Ra’anana Amphitheater on July 21, and Krall at the same venue on August 4, barely a month after her husband, Elvis Costello, plays in Caesarea on June 30.

What’s most perplexing, though, is the omission of a show by the one and only Bob Dylan. Even though his concerts in China were banned, he’d be more than welcome here by the neighborhood bully. But it appears that a rumored show for May is not going to happen. It’s even more mysterious, because he’s going to be so close to Israel he could almost reach out and touch it.

Dylan’s performing on May 28 in Athens, Greece and on May 31 in Istanbul, Turkey. How much trouble could it be to pop over to Tel Aviv for a day or two? Being that close, he could even save some traveling money by taking a boat over from one of the Greek Islands or from Cyprus.

If its too short notice to arrange a big show in one of the many auditoriums or amphitheaters at his disposal, he and his crack band could always show up at the Open Mike night at Mike’s Place on the Tel Aviv waterfront. I’m sure whoever showed up to play would be courteous enough to give Bob a slot on the show.

So, come on Bob. You’ve been here many times, and we love you. Surprise us on May 27th or 28th with an unannounced concert.
