Pepper spray panic
If you’ve ever wondered what it would be liked to be accosted with pepper spray, just ask my wife. As I arrived home the other day, I found Jody literally shrieking in the kitchen. She had been cooking a chicken dish that called for jalapeno pepper. After handling the spicy stuff, she casually rubbed her sleepy eyes. The pepper immediately penetrated her eyelids causing intense pain.
Jody was massaging ice cubes into her sockets when I walked in the door. “Quick, look up on the web what to do for pepper in the eyes!” she implored.
I started to say that I couldn’t imagine Google had anything to say on such an obscure topic, but there was something in Jody’s eyes (oh yeah, it was the pepper) that told me I better get searching fast.
To my surprise, the web is full of panicked cries from other cooks who have succumbed to a similar condition. eHow had a detailed description of how to find fast relief involving dousing your eyes with a mixture of water and milk with an added dash of paraffin oil and saline drops. Other sites recommended aloe Vera and vigorous blinking.
There was also a link to an optometrist in Texas – I’m not sure how that was supposed to help but he had apparently search optimized his site to rank highly for pepper spray!
It took about 15 minutes, but eventually the pain subsided and Jody was able to open her eyes normally. And the chicken was especially good. Especially because it’s probably the last time we’ll ever have that meal in our home again.

[...] Pepper spray panic | ISRAELITY [...]
Some years ago – 1983 – in the army, one very boring day on the weekend, on guard duty, we were snacking on “army cookies” made from oats. When we returned from perimeter patrol, someone had put red pepper on the cookies.
It tasted like battery acid and lingered for a quite a while.
Lots of fun to be had with pepper!
