I understand they were trying to build a rapport with the locals, but they would also have firmly established the Jewish victory had they done so - & that turned out to be far more important than any "rapport"! Well, hindsight is always 20/20 - but if they had been more interested in Judaism itself, they wouldn't have needed hindsight! A shame they didn’t rebuild the Temple in ’67.
