Ikea goes up in flames
It may be nothing compared to the devastating Carmel Forest fire from a couple of months ago. But a lot of people are going to be mourning the Saturday morning blaze which all but destroyed the massive Ikea flagship store in Netanya.
The store’s building and entire stock of merchandise was reportedly destroyed in the blaze. The cause of the fire, which caused no injuries, was unknown, but firefighters believe it began on the roof and spread.
The head of the chain, Avi Gabbai, told Ynet that the fire caused millions of dollars in damage. “It’s a terrible feeling to see the building go up in flames. Luckily no one was hurt; that’s the most important thing,” he said.
Covering 2,000 square metres (21,500 square feet) over two floors, the Netanya outlet opened to much fanfare in 2001. A second, bigger Ikea store opened in October last year in Rishon Lezion, south of Tel Aviv.
Israeli consumers took eagerly to the spacious, convenient shopping and the wide variety and attractive prices the chain had to offer, with
the Netanya branch averaging 7,000 shoppers a day.
The management has already announced they’ll have the store ready for business within a few months. As Forrest Gump would say, one less thing to worry about.

Better that Israelis should buy their furniture from kibbutzim, like Hazorea. They have a wonderful furniture factory, as do other kibbutzim. Also, Ikea was owned by a Nazi.
