Nostalgia Sunday – HaKol Over Habibi

March 6, 2011 - 8:33 PM by

Non-profit organization Tsad Kadima is holding a fund-raiser later this month that has great nostalgic appeal. Shlomit Aharon will be on stage with her new show, Shlomit Aharon and Three Tenors. Aharon is a big talent with a successful solo career. But for those who remember her way back when, she will always be the lead singer of HaKol Over Habibi.

When it got started in the mid-70s, HaKol Over Habibi was, in itself, a nostalgic look backwards. Even the name — meaning “Everything Passes, My Friend” — was nostalgic. Inspired by retro groups like Sha-na-na and The Manhattan Transfer, they presented a revue of best-loved songs from the Fifties and Sixties, with selection of hits from The Platters to the Palmach.

Later on, the group truncated its name to the snappier Habibi and represented Israeli in the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest, where they made 7th place.

This slide show presents Habibi in their heyday. The song is one of their later hits: Rabbinate Steps Blues.

Habibi was one of Israel’s longest-running bands; it kept all of its original members and broke up only in 2002. A collection of the best of Habibi was released in 2004 (You can listen to samples here). And in 2006, they did a reunion tour.

Shlomit Aharon has done well in her solo career (trivia note: She dubbed the Hebrew voice of Ariel the Little Mermaid!) and is currently touring with three new guys in tow.

Which brings us to the benefit for Tsad Kadima, a non-profit organization of parents and professionals dedicated to promoting an independent, active life for children with severe motor disabilities and integrate them as much as possible into the community at large.

Tsad Kadima trains practitioners in Conductive Education (CE), a method develped in the 1920s by Hungarian Jewish physician Professor Andreas Peto, and offers CE certification in European Union and Israel. It run programs for children, adolescents, and young adults all year long, from Carmiel in the north to Beersheba in the south — where it recently inaugurated a lovely new day center.

You can learn more about Tsad Kadima on its website. Background information is available at Giving Wisely, which logs Israeli NGOs and you check its ranking on the MIDOT Rating Report for non-profit organizations in Israel.

The Tsad Kadima fundraiser will be held at 7:30PM on Thursday, March 24, at the Jerusalem Theater. All proceeds benefit children and young adults with Cerebral Palsy. Tickets may be purchased by phone: 02 654 0062 or by email: info@tsadkadima.org.il.
