mark-zuckerberg-snow-gil-gibliIt seems like just yesterday and in fact it was just yesterday that Jerusalem was blanketed in snow. Today, only the memory of the storm and some piles of slush remain, along with a equally massive virtual storm of online photos — so many, in fact, that they inspired this cartoon from the amazing Gil Gibli. In it, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg sends out an an emergency missive: “Please notify Jerusalem’s web-surfers that while the snowfall is nice, our servers can’t bear the overload.”

Nonetheless, there is drama to the sight of Jerusalem’s landmarks frosted with white. The snow has already melted but here are a few images of how it was yesterday and the night before, when the snow started coming down. Undeterred, the Jerusalem Light Rail kept on going down Jaffa Road…

The next morning, there was a slight break in the storm and the Old City could be seen clearly from the Mount of Olives…

But for hours during the day, the city looked like this…

It wasn’t all lovely — roofs leaked, basements flooded and trees suffered immense damage. But Jerusalem’s schoolchildren had fun on their day off (actually two days because for unknown reasons they are still off today), like these East Jerusalemites who went out to play in the snow in front of the Dome of the Rock…

In August, when we are sweating in the sweltering heat, it will be hard to believe that all of this actually happened. We suggest saving this link, and looking at it in eight months time — it could have a cooling effect!

  2. Love it! Wish I was there! Absolutely no snow here in Chicago, in fact we have spring-like temperatures!
