Grey Love

This one comes from Harry, the cool kid of the Israeli blogosphere. He explains to us uncool masses:

Perpetuating the Israeli cultural phenomenon of importing cultural fads seemingly years after they fade elsewhere, rock band Monika Sex has done a “mash up” of their gargantuan hit “Maka Afora” with The Cure’s Lovesong. They are calling it “Ahava Afora” (Grey Love). The title combines “Maka Afora” (Grey Hit) with Love Song. “Maka Afora” was popularized many years ago as the theme song for the television show Florentine. The show followed the lives of post-army twentysomethings in the industrial/trendy neighborhood of Florentine in Tel Aviv. It was a notable series for two reasons. The first being that the director of the series, Eytan Fox, went on to become Israel’s most commercially successful movie film directors. And secondly, it was the first Israeli television shows to feature gays as main characters.

The song is being sold exclusively at imusic (Hebrew). God bless the interweb. You can hear it and watch the video via the Web 2.0-ness of Youtube.

I’m not so uncool that I don’t know this song — I was a mad “Florentine” fan — the ultimate 20-something anthem, the devil-may-care, “let’s all hang out, be broke and do nothing” lyrics make me feel incredibly old and bourgeois.

You Know It’s a Small Country When…

Live in Israel long enough, and you inevitably end up with crazy “it’s a small country stories.” Here’s one by Jameel, who does emergency medical volunteer work when he’s not blogging.

After picking up my son (and spending 15 minutes trying to convince his yeshiva that he really was sick and should go home instead of staying in his dorm), we were driving home and I heard an Intensive Care Ambulance behind me. I saw its flashing lights and moved over to the right lane so it could pass by.

I thought to myself that it was weird that the Mobile ICU was on its way to a call and I didn’t get a pager message about it. I turned on the dome/map light to see if I had “missed” the pager message. A second later, my MDA/Hatzala “Meers” (Nextel-type cellular walkie talkie device) announces: “Jameel!! You know it’s illegal to drive with your dome light on?!”

My son was in shock. Who was talking to me? I had only turned on the light for a second…

The ICU ambulance flew by, and sitting in the paramedic’s seat was a neighbor of mine — he was on his night shift.

I replied that without turning on the light I couldn’t read the pager message!

He laughed, said they didn’t need any more help for the accident they were rushing to, and he hoped to see me on a shift with him soon.

Idan Alterman is a funny and successful Israeli comedian. He’s also really short.

Not long ago, he decided to take an amusing, but still rather serious look at what it’s like for people who are somewhat vertically challenged (OK…SHORT) — and his television documentary is now available on line with English subtitles. Enjoy!

Raptorgirl’s photo of the typical Israeli cafe experience says it all. The good part is the coffee. The bad part, usually, is the news….

The former helps you deal with the latter.

Tyra Banks’ Israeli Experience

Check out the fawning interviewer, who sympathizes with Tyra’s rough experiences filming a commercial in Tel Aviv. (She had to learn Hebrew words! Worse, she had to eat chocolate! Is there any great torture for a model?)
