We’re always excited every time we meet women who are running companies, and it seems in Israel there are a lot of women focused in the biotech sector.

Everyone around this area of the world seems to be talking about peace a whole lot, with not much being done.

What if peace were free and could come in the mail if you just placed your order?

That’s just what happened when we heard about Franck de las Mercedes, a New York based artist who as an expression of his art and desire for peace, sends free peace boxes to anyone around the world who asks for one.

Labeled FRAGILE, Contains: Peace, your postal carrier might look at you strangely when you have the box delivered. The weightless, odorless and tasteless contents inside don’t look like much, but the gift sure can get your friends and family thinking.

Regina Spektor Smiles In Tel Aviv

Regina Spektor smiled at me. I swear. Me and my Moze were waiting outside the
Barby Club in Tel Aviv for Spektor’s Sunday night concert. Israelis
were sucking on cigarettes before the show. Uncharacteristically,
they (we) obeyed Regina’s request that the audience not smoke.
Standing next to a wall, time slowed and she passed by and looked at
me. I smiled, she smiled. And the rest of the world around us didn’t
even notice her grey hoodie as she walked by with the opening act
Only Son to the backstage.

Her show was phenomenal. Those tracks of hers that I couldn’t get
into finally made sense. She sang the audiences’ favorite hits with
believable emotion and tension. She made me cry with happiness and
sadness when she performed “Samson” and I loved her even more when
she thanked us Israelis for making her feel like home.

“It is dreamlike for me to be here tonight,” she said, telling us
that her first and last trip to Israel 10 years ago was the reason
she started singing.

If you Google her name, you will see that the Russian-born Jewish
pianist, signer/songwriter is stealing hearts around the globe. She
didn’t only steal mine, I learned, but my boyfriends too:

“That Regina, she’s good,” said Moze, pretty much speechless … “I
would like to, you know, invite her for a coffee or something. Just
to chat. [pause] With you.”

“Yeah right.”

“No really… she seems interesting.”

“Anyway,” I said, “She’d probably be more interested in being my
friend. She did, after all, smile right at me.”

“What. At you?” Moze uttered in disbelief. “She looked straight into
my eyes and smiled at me!”

Hi Y’all. Israel has a brand-spankin’ new contributor to one of the world’s most popular enviro blogs. Number 108 on Technorati they say! I’ve been appointed as TreeHugger’s Israel writer and will post enviro tidbits a few times a week. I plan on cross-pollinating at Israelity.

While there is lots of enviro technological innovation simmering over here in Israel, I don’t see much in the way of green design and lifestyle stories. Feel free to send me your ideas or 10 cents from any side of the ocean…

…and stay tuned for some Israeli TreeHugging goodness.

Chocolate and Cheese Vs. Milk and Honey: Why a tie makes sense

As Israel keeps its World Cup hopes alive last week in a tie match with Switzerland, I was reminded to write down all the unique qualities that the two countries have in common. I have lived in both countries and believe I have had a fair amount of experience in each to come up with this list:

1. Both Switzerland and Israel are very small countries
2. Both have a broad array of nationalities and tongues residing within their borders
3. Both have powerful and concealed military bases spread throughout their lands
4. Both have mandatory army service and reserve duty
5. Both have a strong nationalistic pride
6. Both love to eat chocolate sandwiches at lunch break
7. Both value traditional families
8. Both have jealous neighbours surrounding them
9. Both use “weird” languages that no one understands, except them
10. Both are well-known for food, either cheese and chocolate or milk, honey and hummus

I would’ve have liked to include number 11. and mention the Palestinian flag incident, but since this blog isn’t political…
