Lizrael has posted some beautiful shots of the views and sites in Safed, one of the Holy Land’s four holy Jewish cities (the other three being Jerusalem, Hebron, and Tiberias).

Here’s a taste:

Finding common ground with Jihad

Israeli Mom is on the Skype directory, and was chanced upon by a 19-year-old from Gaza, named Jihad. They’ve started a dialogue.

I was trying to think of ways to comment on this story, but realized no matter what I say, someone will disagree with me, because everyone who reads this will see exactly what they want to see. So, here it is, speaking for itself, and you are invited to go to the town in the comments section.

Here’s the salient exerpt from her post:

Jihad is a 19 years old student and an avid supporter of Hammas, the kind that opposes to Israel in every way, and is certain that Allah intends for the whole of Israel, not just the West Bank or Gaza, to be under Palestinian control. To him, it’s the will of God, not something that is even debatable. He loathes the PLO and admires the Hammas. He gets his news from Hammas resources and says he won’t even check on international news sites because they are all “controlled by America” and hence prejudiced against Israel. He even justifies suicide bombers as freedom fighters.

It’s a fascinating dialogue, to both of us. He says he never realized there were Jews in Israel that want peace and is fairly surprised. We talk almost daily, not always for very long. Surprisingly enough, we are reaching some common ground sometimes. I won’t go into details, out of respect to the privacy of our chats, but just wanted to report here about this little dialogue that we have forming, between two people that are only 100 km’s away from each other, yet are worlds apart in so many ways. It is a surprisingly friendly dialogue too.

Sarah Smile, on being the mother of three teenagers:

I give up!

I work with teenagers. I’m supposed to know what I’m doing!

I’ve decided I have no idea and the rest is up the Almighty. I’ll take them back all finished when this stage is over!

Drowning in moodswings, the silent treatment, tears, and oh!, the “I-don’t-need-you-I-can-do-whatever-I-want” phase!

G-d help me! I’m serious!

Here’s a nice slice-of-life post.

Stefanella stopped her bike to crow at a crow, with the following result:

Seconds later, I was dive bombed. The crow took flight after my communication and then swooped down into my hair with its talons, attempting to embed and lift. It gave up – I ate a heavy breakfast that morning – and flew ahead of me to land on a tree branch.

One of the commenters on Stefanella’s blog submits that the crow

thought you were doing a mating call. He was just trying the crow equivalent of the primordial club-her-over-the-head-and-drag-her-back-to-the-cave thing. It may not sound entirely romantic, but I think you have stumbled unwittingly on the avian equivalent of “hubba-hubba”. :)

In any case, you gotta hand it to a bird who thinks he can lift a human and take it back to its nest. That is some Israeli (politician) bird.

Definition of Hypocrisy

In an informative post about the brouhaha around the Mugrabi Bridge renovation, Laya brings up a point that has received little attention, but should receive a lot:

Now, one reason that this newest instance of “Muslim outrage” is so absurd is that the Waqf itself has been digging ON the Temple Mount since 1996.

Their digging, by contrast, has been using bulldozers to quite literally rip up priceless archaeological artifacts, many of which are from the first and second temple periods, before unceremoniously dumping them outside the area. This digging, unsupervised by the Antiquities Authority, has caused severe structural damage to the area. While this is in complete violation of 1967’s Protection of Holy Places Law, Israel has barely raised a peep about it, let alone used it as an excuse for violence.

Lots of links and good visuals at her post here.
